Transportation Hub/Car Parks planning application

See the Cabinet meeting 14 September 2011 discussing the Transportation Hub
here. It is Item 13 on the agenda (shown at top of video screen), starts at 2 hrs 32 mins 51 secs and ends at 2 hrs 44 mins 28 sec. Use the scroll bar at the bottom of the video screen to move to this point (can take a bit of juggling around but well worth it).

This will affect St Erth village with an increase in traffic, 64 cars for The Green Lane is nothing in comparision with 750 for the station. The traffic will NOT all use the A30, SATNAV will direct traffic through the village to/from Marazion, Helston, Falmouth etc. When traffic is backed up on the A30 traffic WILL be directed to use the village roads. The section of the grade 2 agricultural field to be used for the overflow car park will be lost as agricultural land forever and will be changed to brownfield. The field to the south of the station, behind the Kingdom Hall is designated in the Penwith Local Plan for business/industrial use this land will be lost forever for that purpose so no chance of more jobs for St Erth and the surrounding area. St Erth, Rose-an-Grouse, Hayle will not benefit in any way, no increase in jobs, no money being spent just noise, pollution, traffic jams and loss of more green fields.

Reasons to object - please feel free refer to this list but do not quote

  • It is not part of the Penwith Local Plan
  • Proposed traffic lights on the A30 and Station Approach will impact on the flow of traffic on the A30 and cause queues on Station Approach and Treloweth Lane, increased pollution from increased traffic. If Treloweth Lane/Station Approach is congested traffic will choose the alternative village route rather than the A30. Satellite navigation already directs Helston, Marazion, Falmouth traffic to St Erth station through the village.
  • Traffic impediment/dangers caused by the narrow rail bridge across Treloweth Lane which is difficult for larger vehicles and impossible for some. An accident waiting to happen.
  • The overflow car park, with the possibility of expansion, is on a Grade 2 green field site protected by national planning policy. If approved the land will not revert to green field.
  • There is no provision for pedestrians' safety (1) to cross the A30 as there is no red light period for pedestrians planned just a central reservation (2) to cross from the proposed overflow car park to get to the station (3) to safely walk from St Erth to the station.
  • The buses serving the A30 only have not agreed to go into the Park and Ride and the existing stops will be moved further away. Existing trains and buses are not timed to meet (get one miss the other). It is possible also that the St Erth bus service will be withdrawn in April so the “Transportation Hub” will be for a car park for trains only. The scheme encourages not discourages the use of cars.
  • The car parks are for St Ives and nowhere else and will not help the economy of Hayle or Penzance. Will this be the death of Hayle train station?
  • Tourism is an important part of our economy, but £10m for a car park for St Ives which will be used mostly for six weeks of the year … while our Penwith Hospitals crumble for lack of funds.
  • It will be more difficult to get access to the recycling centre, particularly in the summer months, which might encourage fly tipping.
  • Although the Car Parks and the Station “improvements” including the disabled access are clearly linked this application is being put in without the other being ready for submission. One is dependent upon the other. If the station improvements are refused the disabled will still be unable to cross the lines.
